Starfield: What to Do With Contraband?
There are countless goods you can buy, sell, and trade in Starfield – and some of them are illegal. If you get caught with contraband in parts of space that are policed and patrolled, you can expect to get arrested by the authorities. So what should you do with this stuff? Find out in our Starfield What to Do With Contraband Guide.
What is Contraband?
As you explore your way through Starfield, you will occasionally come across contraband loot. Often, the appearance and name of this loot is a dead giveaway. These usually include adjectives like “stolen” in front of the name, and they are often found in metal briefcases. You don’t have to guess whether or not something is contraband, though. Each of these items is marked in your inventory with a yellow icon with an arrow pointing inside a box, which you can see below.
When you are in the depths of space or in unregulated territory, you can carry contraband without worry. However, getting caught with contraband in a Freestar system could result in your arrest if your contraband is discovered. The good news is that there are ways to hide and transport contraband, even in these systems. You can also sell contraband, often for serious money.
You Can Sell Contraband in Starfield
As you might suspect, not everyone is interested in buying contraband from you. The good news is that the Trade Authority has no qualms with dealing in black market goods. You can find Trade Authority kiosks all over, and there are dedicated shops on Neon and elsewhere that have plenty of credits for your illicit goods.
Hiding Contraband in Starfield
There are a few steps you can take to protect yourself from getting caught with contraband. First and foremost, higher Deception skills will lower your chance of being caught. At maxed levels, your odds of being caught are reduced by 50 percent.
More importantly, you can trick out your ship to block these scans. Putting contraband in your cargo hold can make it very difficult to detect when you invest in things like a scan jammer or shielded cargo hold. Keep in mind that the more contraband you have, the easier it is for you to get successfully scanned.
