Blade of Disaster 5E | Rime of the Frostmaiden Spell Breakdown

Every new 5th edition product from Wizard of the Coast offers something fun and interesting. While Wizard is primarily a module, it does offer some interesting character options that are useful in any campaign. Specifically, this sourcebook offers three new spells that are each interesting in their own way. To learn about one of our favorites, keep reading our Blade of Disaster 5E Guide!

Blade of Disaster 5E

  • 9th-level conjuration
  • Casting Time: 1 bonus action
  • Range: 60 feet
  • Components: V, S
  • Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute
  • Class: Wizard.

Yay, a new wizard spell! Blade of Disaster is a pretty cool option, all things considered. Here’s what it does:

blade of disaster 5E

You create a blade-shaped planar rift about 3 feet long in an unoccupied space you can see within range. The blade lasts for the duration. When you cast this spell, you can make up to two melee spell attacks with the blade, each one against a creature, loose object, or structure within 5 feet of the blade. On a hit, the target takes 4d12 force damage. This attack scores a critical hit if the number on the d20 is 18 or higher. On a critical hit, the blade deals an extra 8d12 force damage (for a total of 12d12 force damage).

As a bonus action on your turn, you can move the blade up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see and then make up to two melee spell attacks with it again.

The blade can harmlessly pass through any barrier, including a wall of force.

Talk about monster damage. Not only does a standard hit deal 4d12 damage, but a critical hit adds an additional 8d12 force damage. That’s 12d12 maximum damage on a single strike! That critical hit bonus is especially relevant given that you are three times more likely than normal to land a crit. If that isn’t enough for you, you get to make two attacks each turn with this thing.

Pros and Cons

The good news keeps coming, as casting Blade of Disaster only requires a bonus action. The sake is true for using the sword, meaning you can take two swings with this insane damage cannon and still get your action during your turn. Your only limitation is maintaining concentration. Moving the blade is a part of the same action as an attack, and it can travel up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see. If that isn’t enough, you can also send it through any physical barrier.

The spell only lasts a minute, but that’s ample time to wreck almost anything. This is awfully powerful, even for a 9th level spell.

Wrapping up our Blade of Disaster 5E Guide

That concludes our guide. This spell has some interesting uses and is probably my favorite among the three new additions from RotFM. To learn about all of them, see our Rime of the Frostmaiden Spells Guide.
