  • You are immune to fire and poison damage (Lower Planes) or radiant and necrotic damage (Upper Planes).
  • You are immune to the poisoned condition (Lower Planes) or the charmed condition (Upper Planes).
  • Spectral wings appear on your back, giving you a flying speed of 40 feet.
  • You have a +2 bonus to AC.
  • All your weapon attacks are magical, and when you make a weapon attack, you can use your spellcasting ability modifier, instead of Strength or Dexterity, for the attack and damage rolls.

Spell Breakdown

In practice it can seem a little weird. Tasha’s Otherworldly Gaze is a 6th-level Transmutation spell, so it’s a fairly high-end ability. It’s cast during a bonus action, is casted on yourself and has a duration of up to a minute.

Now this is a spell that acts more so like a general buff to all of your abilities. When cast you can choose to draw on magic from the lower or upper planes and that choice changes the effects you can expect. The lower planes will make you immune to Fire and Poison, the upper planes will make you immune to Radiant, Necrotic and Charmed. The spell also has a bunch of other effects like giving you a pair of spectral wings that give you a flying speed of 40 feet. As well as modifying your weapon attacks to all be magical and use your spellcasting modifier instead of Strength or Dexterity.

Ultimately while this spell may not seem very exciting in the long run, it provides a lot of utility. Popping this at the start of a fight or during a tough encounter will help out you and the party quite a bit. Especially if you’re up against a foe that uses a damage type you can be resistant to. Plus this spell lets you attack twice instead of just once and who wouldn’t want to be able to do that. If you want to perform better in combat, this is the spell for you.
