Sekiro Shadows Die Twice Guardian Ape Guide
To find the Guardian Ape, travel through the Gun Fort to Riven Cave. When you reach the idol you will notice a grapple position directly above you. Grapple your way up to the ledge, and then walk the path until you reach Bodhisattva Valley. To the north of that idol is the arena where the fight takes place.
Phase One
Your best bet early on is to attack, attack, attack. You will initially catch the Gurdian Ape by suprise, so blitz him immediately. The arena is large so close the distance as soon as you see him. The Ape has an animation series that he will complete before entering the fight, but you can damage him immediately. Get as many shots in as you can. At the end of the animation, he will typically do a big swipe to the right so be prepared.
The key to this phase is step-dodging to get behind him. The Guardian Ape is strong but not that mobile, so if you are nimble you can stay behind him. Keep dodging and working behind the ape, then hack him to bits.
Throwing Feces (Who does that?)
The Guardian Ape loves to throw poop. No, really. When he suddenly backs away from you, get ready for it. It may sound hilarious, but this is one of his most dangerous attacks and it can poison you. Your best bet is to rush him immediately when he stops backing away. At close range, you can dodge the feces and land several strikes.
If you are hit, it’s wise to have antidotes handy. The good news is it’s fairly easy to dodge these attacks and counterattack.
Sweep Grab
Be very wary of his big sweeping attacks. Periodically, he will swing wildly at you with his left arm. You can expect the attack when you notice a red symbol floating above your head. As soon as you can, jump out of the way as this attack does high damage.
At the end of this phase, you can use the Shinobi execution to cut his head off. That’s that….right?
Second Phase
Believe it or not, the bulk of the battle comes AFTER you behead the beast. Not only is he headless, he’s also got a sword now. This part of the fight isn’t that difficult if you are careful.
There are a few attacks to be aware of here. First there is shrieking. This attack will cause fear; once your fear bar is full you’re dead for good. It’s best to get away as soon as a shriek attack is coming. You’ll know it’s coming when you see the red-colored symbol over your head.
You also must watch out for the belly slide slice. The Guardian Ape will get a running start and kind of belly flop at you. When he does, he will swing wildly with his sword. Time it out and you can jump the sword. If you do it right, you can get in several slices before he recovers. He often shrieks immediately after this attack, so be ready. Avoid his big attacks and keep hitting him, he’ll be dead in no time.
