There are so many incredible magical items in the Fifth Edition of Dungeons and Dragons that it can be difficult to choose a favorite. Well, this is true for some people anyway. My heart will always be loyal to the greatest magical item of all time: The Cloak of Billowing.
Often referred to as the Cape of Billowing by people that don’t know what they are talking about, the Cloak of Billowing is a common Wondrous item first introduced in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything. Found on Page 136, the book only dedicates a single sentence to explain this wonderful accessory. Read on to learn more about it.

While wearing this cloak, you can use a bonus action to make it billow dramatically.
The Cloak of Billowing is a common item that is not hard to come by. While magical, it is limited to a single ability. While wearing the cloak, your character can use a bonus action to make the cloak billow dramatically. That’s it. That’s what it does.
I know it’s a lot to take in, but I think we can all agree this cloak has some interesting possibilities. Read on to learn how this item could transform your next campaign.

The Cloak of Billowing in Media
Long-time fans of Critical Role might remember the Cloak of Billowing and its brief appearance in Campaign 2. The Might Nein purchased a Cloak of Billowing from Pumat Sol shortly making their way to Eiselcross. Despite a brief interaction with and purchase of the item, the item was never mentioned again. It is not clear which of the characters ultimately ended up with it.
Conclusion
Look, I love this cloak. You don’t have to agree, but either way, you cannot disrupt my dreams of a sweeping cloak that billows majestically on command. Anywhere. It works inside, for God’s sake. Does this item make any real sense in your campaign? Nah. Is discussing it going to probably be little more than a distraction? I doubt it. But this game is fun, and sometimes all a bunch of nerds need is to daydream about a cloak that billows on command.
