Where to Find the Spear of Kephalos in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

The very first Rare level weapon you can obtain is the Spear of Kephalos. While it’s not an end-game type of weapon (we happen to love the Mallet of Everlasting Flame), it is a good option at the very beginning of the game.  Rare weapons offer two buffs and an engraving slot, which gives this spear much more room for improvement than other options you may come across with similar damage stats.

In the Footsteps of Gods

To obtain the Spear of Kephalos, you will need to head to the Temple of Zeus in Sami on Kephallonia to get the quest “In the Footsteps of Gods.” When you approach the temple you will notice a priestess praying on the steps of the Temple, to your right of the doorway. When you approach the priestess you will overhear her prayers.

The Temple of Zeus

When you approach the priestess, she is praying for a champion to bring her the Spear of Kephalos. If you show interest in the spear, she will offer you a reward to retrieve it for her. Once you retrieve it, it will be up to if you want to give her the spear as promised or keep it for yourself. The priestess will tell you that according to legend, the spear has been hidden in the caves nearby for years.

The Melissani Cave

There are actually two ways to enter the Melissani caves.  The longer way is by heading down the steps of the temple and follow the marker for the mission. It will lead you across the street towards a large hill. As you approach, you will notice a steep drop into the water-filled cave below. In the pool at the bottom of the cave, you will find a few items of treasure and other items. If you head towards the back of the cave you will see a tunnel. That tunnel sends you underwater; you can swim for a while into the cave before it dumps you off at the entrance of the final room. Inside the multi-level room are 4 or 5 weak guards keep watch over the Spear of Kephalos. DIspatch them, take the Spear of Kephalos, and head out.

There is actually a better way to get into the cave if you don’t care about grinding for loot under water. As soon as you leave the steps of the temple you will get a popup that your enemy is nearby. Send your hawk to explore and he will see a small cave opening directly behind Temple of Zeus. Look for a small campsite with ferns behind it; you’ll see a crack in the side of the mountain behind the campsite that you can squeeze through. On the other side, you will immediately encounter the guards watching over the Spear of Kephalos.

Return to the Temple of Zeus

When you return to the priestess, you have a few options. You can simply give her the spear and refuse any reward. You can also hand over the spear and graciously accept your cold hard cash. The third option is our favorite; simply lie to her and tell her you weren’t able to find it. The Priestess is understanding, and just like that you’ve got your hands on your first Rare weapon.

Should I Keep the Spear of Kephalos?

Obviously, it is your decision whether or not to keep the Spear of Kephalos. Although it is a Rare weapon, it is possible you already have something stronger in your inventory depending on when you take on this mission. There is no downside to lying to the priestess and keeping the spear though, so we recommend doing so. it is worth noting that holding on to the spear is not possible without first lying to the priestess. While you in theory are carrying the spear, it will only enter your inventory after you lie.
