Necromancer Names Guide | Examples and Naming Conventions for 5E

Of all the schools of magic, Necromancy is absolutely the one most people fear. The Necromancer may be the most common enemy in a Dungeons & Dragons 5E campaign; what adventuring party doesn’t run into undead at some point? That’s the forces of necromancy (in some way) messing with the natural order of things. The stigma of the Necromancer usually causes creatures to hide away from basic civilization. This means that most necromancers decide to change their name, or at least augment it in some way. Necromancer Names 5E Guide

Necromancers don’t have a strict culture. They are usually outcasts, maybe with some evil or extraplanar connections. This means they can really get out there… and occasionally drop completely into insanity. This doesn’t mean you have to think extremely hard about your Necromancer’s name. But, a short consideration of the consequences of practicing hated magic may be in order.

The Cost of Societal Exile

Practitioners of Necromancy are typically either Clerics or Wizards. Clerics that practice necromancy worship a specific god. These clerics would usually worship the Death or Grave domains. These clerics aren’t necessarily ostracized from society – some Grave clerics lead funerals and help people grieve. Death Clerics are intended as an evil archetype, and are absolutely left out of society.

Wizards of the school of Necromancy are also quite bad for your standard world. Unlike Clerics, Necromancy Wizards don’t get access to Raise Dead or Resurrection. There’s no real redeeming qualities of a Necromancy Wizard, other than practical usefulness. Necromancy Wizards either become adventurers or full-out Necromancers; it depends entirely on if a good or evil force finds them first!

Necromancers don’t need to necessarily leave society. As stated before, Grave clerics are likely to become town healers or lead people in prayer. The spell Raise Dead or Resurrection is essential for kings or people with funds, and is a rather “good” spell in the Necromancy school. These clerics are often allowed in civilization, and might even be well-loved.

Examples of Necromancer Names

But when forced out of their homes, Necromancers search for power, revenge, or companionship elsewhere. Those that are wanting to intimidate entire civilizations won’t be able to do so with their basic names. Gnomish or Halfling necromancers would probably really want to consider changing their name up. It’s hard to destroy society when your name is “Waywocket” after all!

Hard consonants and a lot of “os” and “is” will be helpful here! You want to sound intimidating just from saying your name.

Perhaps more important than a name, the Necromancer likely picked up a title. They’re probably a powerful magic user, after all; they earned one!

And that’s about it! Necromancers that stay in society will probably just keep their name. And hey, maybe taking the name “Waywocket” will trick a gnomish town into thinking you’re fine!
