Lizardfolk Names Guide | Examples for 5E
Wizards of the Coast, and Dungeons & Dragons in general, adore their scaled races. The Lizardfolk from Volo’s Guide to Monsters is no different. Tall, green-ish, imposing, and carnivorous, most see Lizardfolk and see a scaled humanoid. Little do they know, they are looking at a creature close to dragons. These monstrous humanoids are one of the most different-thinking races in all of Toril (that you can play!). Logical creatures with a survivor’s mindset, the Lizardfolk’s intensive personality and mindset is important for their name. That’s why our Lizardfolk Names Guide will help you generate one naturally.
Lizardfolk Names 5E Guide
5E’s Lizardfolk are unique and interesting, even amongst older editions of the game. It’d be a waste to put their name into a generator, because their names are so specific to their lifestyle. If you want your Lizardfolk to have a bit of panaz compared to their peers, you might want to know their culture.
How Do You Name a Lizardfolk?
Lizardfolk in 5e are exceedingly logical. They only know three major emotions; fear, aggression, and pleasure. Fear for them is abstracted a bit. They see a creature that is “fearsome” and know they are to be avoided if possible. Lizardfolk don’t really go into full terror; they just see creatures, objects, or magic as worthy of evasion.
Lizardfolk are aggressive when aggression is correct, such as when they need to eat or fight. They don’t get angry like humans do; insults simply cause a creature to become more likely to earn aggression. Objects and creatures that are pleasurable should be preserved, even at the cost of lizards health. They consider these things as creatures and objects that cause less situations that inspire fear. This is why Lizardfolk join adventuring parties; aid in combat is pleasurable to them.
This logical employment is often strange to other creatures. Lizardfolk understand how emotions work, but will never have access to those. They’re too logical, and too practical – even a dead companion becomes little more than another source of meat to them. Of course, a Lizardfolk growing up in constant connection to emotion will have a better understanding than most.
This lack of empathy spawns partially from how cruel Lizardfolk’s homes are. Survival is difficult for a Lizardfolk, so utility is important for them. Right now, Lizardfolk see no need to become a stronger political or military power in Toril; survival is all that matters to them (by default).
This want to survive extends to adventuring parties. Lizardfolk see those without scales as soft, like hatchlings. Those in their party earn the Lizardfolk’s protection, almost by pity.

Examples of Lizardfolk Names
Lizardfolk pull their names from the Draconic language, and typically by their behaviors. A Lizardfolk who ambushes from the trees might be called “Vine,” or one who is the strongest swimmer “Shark.” There is no difference between male and female Lizardfolk, in terms of names.
