There Are Two Ways to Save the Masks in Baldur’s Gate 3

For most people, heading into the cave after the initial fight with Ethel results in combat with four masked NPCs. Saving those NPCs can seem impossible, but there are a few ways you can achieve it. We break down the options below.

Gank Ethel in the Teahouse

This one comes down to your party composition, builds, and luck. Ethel is designed to run from the fight once she reaches half of her hit points. This is a problem, given that she calls these NPCs to fight for her if you chase her into the tunnel and confront her there. The straightforward way around this is by killing her before she ever gets out of the Teahouse.

This is easier said than done. Ethel has a lot of hit points, and as soon as she loses half of them she bolts at the first opportunity. Your options for holding her there including loading up as much damage as possible in the early rounds, using spells that lock her into place, or whittling her down early before using a large damage spell or attack right before she bolts. If you can kill her in the Teahouse, the masked NPCs are not hostile to you.

Casting Silence on Ethel

If Ethel makes it out of the Teahouse, not all is lost. You can still save the masks in Baldur’s Gate 3 if you take out Ethel before she can call the masks for help. The best way to do this is to sneak up on her and cast silence. When you use this spell, she is unable to call for help and the NPCs never come.

Untested: Use a Familiar

A third option that I have only heard about second-hand involves using a familiar. Please note I have not tried this method, but it seems sound. Remember, the key thing here is to not let Ethel call the NPCs to fight you. If she does, they are going to remain hostile even after she is dead.

This method involves sneaking as a party while using your familiar. Attach the NPCs with the familiar while your party sneaks after ethel. Theoretically, the NPCs will not engage your party as they are fighting your familiar. If you can kill Ethel before they can kill your familiar, she won’t be able to call them in.
